May 4th is the 13th Annual Houston Dragon Boat Festival!!
The Buffalo Bayou will be overflowing with people and boats at the 13th Annual Houston Dragon Boat Festival in downtown Houston – the official year of the WATER DRAGON.
Thirty corporate and community teams will paddle their way in the waters of downtown Houston with other festivities celebrating Asian and Asian-American culture occurring at Allen’s Landing. Corporate teams including Amegy Bank of Texas, HEB, Houston Astros, PricewaterhouseCoopers, American Express, and Silver Eagle will be guided by the beats of a drummer as they paddle traditional Hong Kong style BuK Dragon Boats in a fierce yet friendly competition.
Texas Dragon Boat Association (TDBA) is collaborating with The Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association to provide fun activities for the whole family celebrating Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month.
Performances include lion dancing, martial arts, Hawaiian style dancing, belly dancing, and many more activities bringing awareness of Asian and Asian-American culture.
The entire family can enjoy the culture and traditions of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans and experience the culture and traditions through a sample of Asian cuisine, colorful arts and crafts and other activities during the festival.
There is no admission fee to the event, and it is open to the public.
Once again the MD Anderson Super Heroes youth team is competing. This will be the second time the team, which consists of leukemia and cancer teenagers, parents, doctors, nurses and other “sidekicks,” is paddling in our event. Also this year’s festival will feature Blind Fury,  a team whose members are from the Lighthouse of Houston. The Lighthouse of Houston is a private, nonprofit education and service center dedicated to assisting blind and visually impaired people to live independently.
Overcoming some of their challenges, both the MD Anderson Super Heroes and Lighthouse of Houston team will paddle furiously in the water of Buffalo Bayou to win. Come cheer these teams on to victory!
