What is Universal Design? Should I Include it in My Home?

It is recommended that you incorporate Universal Design in your custom home. But, what does that mean?

Universal Design means utilizing the components of your house to enable all generations and physical abilities to live and thrive at the highest level possible.

Think about all your family, friends, and other people that will be visiting your home. What about loved ones who might potentially live with you someday? Do they have any physical disabilities? Maybe your parents are in their old age?

Here are some ways to make your home a part of the Universal Design, so that anyone and everyone can be comfortable in your home:

No-step entries

Motion-sense lighting

Secondary downstairs bedroom

Step-free showers

Although, you may not need these accommodations, yourself, your family members or house guests may. It’s important to think about those who will be spending time in your home, as well as modifications that may be needed in the years ahead.
