Home maintenance is necessary for every home. But, after building your dream home, it’s critical to stay on top of your home maintenance schedule to keep your home in the best shape possible.
What is Home Maintenance?
Home maintenance refers to the checklist of tasks that will keep your home looking and functioning like it’s brand new. Keeping your home maintenance schedule in mind will prevent many problems from occurring, while addressing any possible current issues. A home maintenance schedule helps you stay on top of it all! It’s important to check on your home maintenance a few times a year to make sure you don’t miss any important items.
Home Maintenance Schedule
A schedule will help you stay on top of most of your home maintenance. Many of these home maintenance checklist items require attention once or twice a year.
Twice a year (or more often):
Clean the gutters. Avoid leaf buildup by cleaning the gutters. This ensures the gutters work properly, allowing adequate flow, during rainstorms.
Replace air filters. A clean filter allows your unit to run more efficiently and also provides cleaner air inside your home.
Replace batteries in smoke detectors. A good rule of thumb is to change the batteries when Daylight Savings hits twice a year.
Reseal the exterior. Check for any signs of cracks around the exterior of the home. If cracks are found, caulk and seal to prevent water from seeping in.
Once a year:
Wash the exterior. This includes washing your paint, stucco, brick, siding, and other exterior materials. This will keep your home looking brand new and help the materials last longer.
Check the air conditioning pan for any water. If water is present, call your HVAC company.
Since most home maintenance items are to be done only once or twice a year, the responsibility is relatively easy and not very time consuming. However, keeping this home maintenance schedule in mind will help you keep your custom home in tip-top shape, while avoiding potentially serious issues down the road.
